The old town of Altea is situated to the north of Benidorm on a hill looking down, above the modern beachfront developments. These are not high-rise buildings, as the emphasis is on low-rise architecture, which has helped to maintain a quiet environment.

The old town is a delightful jumble of white house, narrow streets and alleys, and long flights of steps leading up to the Blue-domed church – from which there are fantastic views over La Marina region. Up here is the main shopping street, the Avenida Fermin Sanz Orrio, where the bars, restaurants, and art galleries are buzzing.

Along the coast is the seafront esplanade, with palm trees flanking the café and restaurant terraces. Every Tuesday a market is held in the seafront barrio. The coastal scenery around Altea is varied. In parts, the tall cliffs come to an abrupt end, and here one can find small, quiet coves where the clear water washes over smooth, sun-bleached pebbles. Next to the town are the wider and busier beaches of La Roda and Cap Blanch. Then there is La Olla (facing two tiny islands) and Cap Negret.

During the final week of September, Altea holds its fiestas in honour of the Moors and Christians. With music, costumes, and fireworks, rival processions take to the streets for an entire week of celebration.
