Area Guide - Properties for sale in the Balearic Islands
- Spain
It is not a particularly well known fact, but the Balearic
island of Menorca boasts more miles of golden beaches than neighbours Mallorca
and Ibiza added together. It is even less well known that there is a resort
town (in the east of Menorca) called Shangri-La. This second fact seems quite
apt, Menorca being many visitor's favourite of the Balearics; the first fact is
just one of the reasons why.
As well as being points ahead in the Balearic beach mileage league table,
Menorca is considerably quieter than Mallorca or Ibiza, and so perhaps more
suited to young families. Even the main resorts are peaceful, as there is no
emphasis on nightlife here. Menorca is rather more tuned into relaxation and
rest than dancing into the early hours, but there are still naturally plenty of
places where you can let your hair down if you wish to. A key reason for this
is that Menorca has remained largely development-free, retaining all of the
natural beauty that makes the island such a favourite with nature lovers. It is
a green and pleasant land with lush open fields, pine forests and an untamed
northern coastline dotted with pretty fishing villages.
At just 270 square miles in size with a population of around 68,000, Menorca
enjoys a near-perfect Mediterranean climate with an average of 11 hours of
sunshine per day. Even in the winter, Menorca is still blessed with mild,
bright weather, making the island practically a year-round resort.
As towns of interest and tourist attractions go, Menorca has a varied range to
offer, especially in the island capital of Mao (also known as
Mahon). This busy port boasts plenty to see, with the harbour
waterfront as the centre of tourist activity. The best way to appreciate the
harbour is to take a boat tour to admire the impressive (though low-rise)
skyline of historic buildings such as Golden Farm, the 18th Century Xoriguer
Gin Distillery and the old customs house. In the centre of Mao lies the
beautiful Es Freginal Park, a perfect place to relax and enjoy the greenery
around you. From here, you could head to the city square Placa Esplanada for
home-made ice creams and then conclude your day with a visit to the stunning
Museum of Menorca.
Buying property in Spain has already been a quiet national pastime of the
British for decades, and the Balearics have been the subject of considerable
interest in this respect. Despite its reputation as the shyest member of the
Balearic family, Menorca has always been immensely popular with those looking
to invest in Spanish property, and this remains the case. escapetospain.co.uk
