It has seen substantial inward investment and the seafront is very attractive. Apartment blocks rarely rise over three storeys and new developments are safely kept to the town outskirts. A 24-hour restaurant and bar culture prevails

Alicante is a bustling commercial centre with good facilities. The city also has style and charm, with baroque buildings and palm-lined avenues. There are parks, beaches, villages and castles in its environs. Alicante airport is eight kilometres outside the city.

Santa Pola is both a popular resort and active fishing village. Its fish market, fish restaurants and aquarium are key attractions.

Guardamar de Segura is a popular summer resort with good beaches. Despite tourism it retains a sense of proportion and strong Spanish identity. Colourful summer festivals come thick and fast.

Elche is an ancient inland town redolent with times past. Its museums are impressive and festivals spectacular. Not surprisingly Palm Sunday is a major celebration because around Elche is Europe's largest palm forest. Within the forest is the popular botanical garden.

Mar Menor has the best resort facilities in Murcia province. A world of clean, quiet beaches, it is popular with Spaniards. There are excellent watersports on the lagoon that was once a bay. The winter water temperature averages 18 degrees Celsius.

La Manga is the sleeve that separates the lagoon from the Mediterranean. It has a famous strip of bars, restaurants and hotels. Apartments are of a reasonable price but there is less infrastructure and community. La Manga Club is an exclusive resort worth visiting.

Cartagena is built around a natural harbour and has a feast of historical buildings. The museums, architecture and world's first submarine attract large numbers of visitors.
