Moraira's
perfect orientation provides the majority of the properties with a southerly
downhill view towards the sea. The surrounding hills provide both shelter
from the winter weather from the north and a natural vortex for cooling
summer sea breezes. Protected for centuries by its watchtower and castle,
the village atmosphere of this pretty town has made it a favourite with
the visitor. The combination of a well equipped resort and traditional
Spanish life makes for a wonderful atmosphere.
Although
there is still a fishing harbour, the village itself has grown and now
sports a large marina where vessels are berthed all year round. Most
mornings there are auctions in the fish market and on Fridays there
is a street market.
There are some lovely sheltered beaches in and around Moraira.
At El Portet there is a superb beach which has bars and restaurants
alongside. Originally a small fishing village it has grown into a holiday
and retirement resort within the last 25 years. The village centre,
with its small and colourful Main Street, still retains much of the
original character and atmosphere.
The
Local Authority has exerted strong planning control since the beginning
and prevented the development characteristic of other Spanish coastal
resorts and the terrain, sloping gently from the coast into the pine
clad foothills, provides views of the coastline uncluttered with high-rise
buildings. New villas have been constructed on the hills surrounding
the old village and are within a few minutes' drive of all amenities.
Meander through the narrow village streets where small boutiques and
pavement cafes vie for your attention, down to the marina where a variety
of waterfront cafes and restaurant provide the ideal location to relax
in the warm, balmy evenings and watch the world go by.
Throughout
the village there are numerous restaurants capable of tempting almost
any palate - French, Italian, Greek, English and of course Spanish cuisine
can all be enjoyed. You can lunch, and at the same time enjoy the wonderful
views over the bay to the Penon de Ifach near Calpe - a huge rock rising
out of the sea.
Near the centre of the village, overlooked by some waterfront cafes
where the adults can relax, there is a good sandy beach which shelves
at quite a gentle angle into the sea and is ideal for young children.
Alternatively, to get away from it all, try exploring the surrounding
area where quiet, small sand and shingle coves can be found.
If
you are keen on windsurfing there is an excellent beach just over 1km
to the south where a steady breeze usually provides ideal conditions.
Water skiing is also available or hire a boat from the marina and just
potter around the coast, Also in the vicinity there are two golf courses,
riding stables and tennis clubs.
It is no wonder over 100,000 British people have bought homes on the
beautiful Costa Blanca.
Property here currently offers the best value for money in Spain and
makes an irresistible proposition for investors disappointed with the
poor performance of the stock market and pension schemes.
