Property in Menorca
A guide to property for sale in Menorca, Spain.
Menorca is the Balearic island furthest from the mainland
and it is set apart from the rest of the country in many other ways.
The coastline of Menorca
is, most arguably, more unspoiled than in any other part of Spain. It’s
countryside remains largely green and pleasant with cows roaming the
meadows.
In 1993 it was declared a Biosphere reserve by UNESCO
to ensure the preservation of both S’Abulfera dies Grau wetlands and
the archaeological sites that have been found all over the interior.
As the northern island of the group, Menorca has a
slightly wetter climate and generally is cooler, with the cold trasmontana
wind blowing between October and April. Ferries from the Spanish mainland
and Majorca arrive at the capital, Mahon, on the east coast. Mahon is
a pleasant town with a distinctly British feel and an impressive harbour.
There is a little of the old quarter to be explored but there are elegant
Georgian mansions on the outskirts of the town.
The Xoriguer gin distillery produces a distinctive
Menorcan gin that was introduced by the English and is drunk
throughout Spain. The other principal town is Ciutadella, which was
the capital of the island under the Muslims and then the Christians
until the British arrived. The island remains largely unspoilt and is
popular with British homebuyers looking for a quiet retreat.
