of course the Spanish – Marbella is probably the most cosmopolitan city
in the world today.
For years an air of “Marbella Vice” hung over the area
– indeed, according to the Bank of Spain, in 2001 12% of the property
purchases in the region were financed from the illicit gains made by
drug trafficking – the vast majority of the supply of cannabis comes
from Morocco and you can see this African country’s coast from Marbella
on a good day. Maybe all those boats in the marina are not all for leisure
use.
However, the image of Marbella as the “Costa Del Crime”
in the 1970s has given way more to the “Costa Del Golf” and the influx
of residents who made their wealth from less dubious business is now
the norm.
Marbella and its Golden Mile is now
not only an attraction for royalty, films stars, and affluent retirees
, but also for thousands of young Europeans who have relocated in order
to acquire a better quality and standard of life.
Increasingly, the younger set are moving westwards
towards Estepona and the so called ‘New Golden Mile’ where the price
of property is that more affordable. Many people are still leading the
same kind of life as they did in their home countries – working, raising
a family - but having a better time doing it. With an average of 325
days sunshine each year, and an average temperature of 20 oC, life in
this part of the world is much more of an outdoor one. With the advent
of the budget airlines, it is now easy and cheap to visit home should
you feel the need.
