Lying between the French border to the North and Barcelona
to the south, with some 200km of coastline, the Costa Brava (wild coast
because of its craggy bays and headlands) is easily accessible by air
(airports at Gerona and Barcelona) or car (motorway almost all the way
through France and Spain,or there are ferries to Bilbao and Santender).
The best parts of the Costa
Brava are still truly beautiful,with the northerly stretch dotted
with perfect small beaches in rocky coves surrounded by pine clad hills.Strictly
speaking the Costa Brava runs out at Blanes,a few miles north of Barcelona,but

For the purpose of a brief description we will start
with coastal towns in the north close to the French border and work
southwards to Barcelona.
Roses lies at the head of a sweeping bay. Its sandy
beach,the longest in the Costa Brava, has become a
mecca for lovers of water sports. L'Escala is a small resort, popular
mainly with local tourists. It has fine beaches and a small port where
fishing nets dry in the sun.
L' Estarit is a good base for the tiny island of Illes
Medes,a former pirates lair which now forms a marine preserve with perfect
clear waters for skin diving.
Begur is a hilltop town just inland. It has excellent
views of the coast and small coves are tucked at its feet. Lafranc is
a whitewashed town with a promenade leading to neighbouring Calella
and is regarded as one of the most pleasant resorts on the coast.
Palamos is a working port with modern hotels to the
south and secluded beaches and coves to the north. Tossa de Mar at the
end of a tortuous corniche is one of the prettiest places along the
Costa Brava. Above the modern town is the old town(Vila
Vela),a protected national monument.
The medieval walls, which have three towers, enclose
fishermens cootages, a 14th century church and countless bars. Lloret
de Mar a few miles further south is the largest and busiest resort on
the coast of Costa Brava.
The working port of Blanes has one of the largest beaches
on the coast. Spectacularly sited above the cliffs are the botanical
gardens with over 7000 species of Mediterranean and tropical plants.
Finally we come to Barcelona a city with impeccable
style and a truly international flavour. The Costa
