Property for sale in Tenerife
Canary Islands - Spain
A guide to property for sale in Tenerife, Canary Islands
Tenerife - "The Island of Eternal Spring"
- is a beautiful, aromatic Canary Island that, like the rest of the
island group, was formed millions of years ago through intense and
prolonged volcanic activity. In the case of Tenerife, the top of the
volcano imploded (so falling into itself), resulting in a huge oval
crater that at its furthest distance rim to rim measures an astounding
17 kilometres: so big, in fact, that it is hardly recognisable as
a crater at all! Mount Teide totally dominates the island, but there
should be no cause for concern considering it last erupted (for ten
days) almost a century ago, causing minimal damage. All has been perfectly
calm since those days in 1909.
As the Canary Islands' most populous city (with over 200,000 residents),
Tenerife's charming capital Santa Cruz is the focus of plenty of activity,
and has many attractions for the whole family. Very much a walking
city of tree-lined streets, impressive parks and squares, Santa Cruz
bears an air of confidence and calmness that serves to soothe the
visitor, ensuring that slipping into the way of things here is easy.
Popular areas of Santa Cruz include La Plaza de España - site
of some magnificent historic buildings - and Garcia Sanabria Park,
a wonderland of exotic trees and plants from all over the world.
The principal resort in the north of Tenerife is the small but swanky
city of Puerto de la Cruz, home to the iconic architectural marvel
Lago Martianez. A series of seawater pools designed to enhance the
vegetation of the reclaimed land on which it was built, this beautiful
feature of Tenerife was designed by maverick Lanzarote artist César
Manrique (1919 - 1992). There are many amazing examples of Manrique's
work all over Lanzarote, and each and every one is startling. As a
painter, architect, sculptor, landscape gardener, environmentalist
and all-round visionary genius, he has left a considerable legacy
to the world of art and the Canary Islands he loved so much.
The second city and original capital of Tenerife, with a population
of over 125,000, is La Laguna. A very elegant destination with a great
many stunning 18th and 19th Century buildings and monuments, La Laguna
is Tenerife's cultural and religious heart, and also seat of the island's
principal seat of higher learning, San Fernando University.
As well as remaining a top tourist destination, Tenerife is also an
established hotspot for investment in Spanish property. The climate,
totally agreeable pace of life, scenery and attractions have prompted
many British people to start a new life or invest in property for
sale in Tenerife, and there are no signs of this trend slowing down.
