Almuñecar
Almuñecar is situated on the little know Costa Tropical. The old Moorish castle stands on the hill overlooking the town.
In Almuñecar, you'll discover places to rest and relax, and places to set your heart pounding, among beauty spots of tropical plants and fruits and 5 miles of clean, sandy beaches.
Becoming increasingly popular among foreign residents, among the numerous attractions of Almuñecar is the Loro Sexi bird park which will delight adults and children alike. Some 1,500 birds of 120 different species are on display here, including doves, peacocks, parrots, cockatoos, macaws, swans, peacocks, parrots, cockatoos, macaws, swans, ducks, ostriches, etc.
Close by is the Parque del Majuelo, a pretty botanical garden containing Europe's largest collection of subtropical plants, with more than 400 species, the majority from Brazil and Cuba. In the park you will also find the ruins of the fish salting "factory" which was founded by the Phonecians in 4th Century BC. Climb up to the castle for a good overall view.
Some four kilometres from the town, and following the river valley is the Roman Aquaduct, constructed during the first century, and was still in use a few decades ago. Some stretches a truly impressive, well worth the effort to find them.
