Coin
Coin is situated in the fertile valley of the rio Grande aprox. 21 Km inland from Marbella .
Coín is another exponent of the white villages and in spite of its great development still conserves some parts of urban areas with narrow streets, whitewashed houses, courtyards with archway entrances, windows and balconies with forged iron railings, etc. of unmistakable Arab structure.
One of the most picturesque, yet sombre places in Coin is the shrine of Nuestra Señora de Fuensanta. The beautifully preserved chapel stands on top of a hill beside the ground which is used for the annual fair. The views are magnificent, but the sombre note is struck by the now abandoned house, which stands close by in a field. In 1893 it was the site of a brutal murder in which the local priest was shot by intruders who believed him to have hidden away a cache of money. The story of the crime and its aftermath were told in Bartolomé Abelenda's book, The Coin Crime.
Coín has many craftsmen who are basically dedicated to pottery, although there are also specialists in forging, palm platting, saddlery and stonemasonry.
The traditional cooking in Coín is based on all year round dishes such as spicy soup, stews in different varieties, fry ups, soup with mayonnaise, peppers and tomato soup, sauce, "matamario", and in the winter, boiled soup, and broths. In the summer there is cold soup. And for dessert, baked yams, porridge with syrup, rusks, raisins in liquor, date bread, etc.
