Competa

From the mountains to the sierra, Competa is one of the most spectacular enclaves in the province. For mountain lovers, a walk through the forest trail which leads to Venta Panaderos by the Casa de la Mina (mine house), can become an unforgettable experience, with splendid views of the Verde, Tres Cruces, Cisne and many other hills which make the Sierra Almijara such a beautiful area.

Cómpeta has a population of about 4,500 people, twenty percent of whom are or "were" foreign. It is six hundred and fifty metres above sea level and from its flower bedecked streets and plazas there are spectacular views of sea, countryside and mountains.

The town has a varied selection of bars and restaurants, shops, banks, markets and all the services, medical included, needed in a modern community. One can sample local dishes or enjoy a varied selection of succulent tapas, including fresh fish and seafood brought up in the early morning from the fish markets on the coast. Plaza Almijara, the focal point and main square of the village, over which towers the belfry of the 16th century church of Nuestra Señora de La Asuncion, provides an excellent place to rest and observe the tranquil unfolding of the daily affairs of the village. A twenty minute drive down through the fertile Sayalonga valley takes you to the new motorway near Algarrobo. The motorway runs parallel to the coast and in one hour Málaga's international airport can be reached while the beaches at Torre del Mar and Torrox are only a half hours drive away.
