Frigiliana
Four kilometres inland from Nerja, at a height of about 1000 meters, the historic white town of Frigiliana nestles against the craggy mountain, an ancient Moorish settlement built like some giant's rubic cube with cobbled, stepped streets leading endlessly upwards.
By day it is all blinding whiteness interspersed with the vibrant colours of geraniums and bougainvillea, while the night air is filled with the intoxicating aroma of a creeping plant known locally as La Dama de Noce.
Peace, tranquillity and a vibrant community steeped in tradition are the essence of Frigiliana. The traditional Easter processions, embodying both Christian belief and pagan ritual.
Other more lighthearted occasions including, in June, the feast of San Juan are testament to the enduring traditions of everyday life in Spain. These fiestas make worthwhile diversions during one's stay here and on other days there are endless walks through olive groves, avocado plantations and lines of almond trees as well as mountain treks for the more adventurous.
Climbing the steep streets and exploring small alleyways, stopping off now and again for some refreshment in one of the numerous bars and cafes is an easy way to pass the time and in July and August one can swim in the beautiful public swimming pool. The sea, of course, is only a ten-minute drive away and in Nerja you will find a thriving street market on Tuesdays as well as an interesting flea market on Sunday mornings. Frigiliana has several very good restaurants, a lot of interesting drinking holes, some that stay open until very late, and plenty of shops selling a wide range of goods from food and wine to craft items.
