Alicante
The stylish city of Alicante was founded in 324 BC by the Greeks,
who gave the new city the name of Akra Leuke, meaning 'White Peak'.
When the Romans captured Akra Leuke, they in turn renamed it Lucentum:
'City of Light'. Today, Alicante is one of Spain's most important
city resorts, attracting millions of tourists a year who are intent
on sampling its considerable charms rather than occupation or rebranding.
Alicante is a beautiful place guarded over by the imposing Benacantil
Mountain - the 'white peak' in question. Sitting proudly on its peak
is one of Europe's great ancient architectural wonders - Castillo
de Santa Barbara. A huge fortress built and added to between the 9th
and 18th centuries, it is an essential Alicante experience if only
for the magnificent views across the city and the Mediterranean.
A city of some 300,000 inhabitants, Alicante is nonetheless small
enough to explore in detail with ease, and makes for a very pleasurable
walking city with plenty to see. With this region bathed in virtually
year-round sunshine, just strolling along the portside esplanades
or wandering among the beautiful buildings of the historic quarter
are greatly satisfying ways to spend time in Alicante. Along the Rambla
de Mendez or Avenida Alfonso el Sabio promenades, you can expect to
find hawkers peddling African art and crafts; such trading has gone
on for centuries since the days of the Moorish occupation.
The countryside around Alicante is delightful. Craggy mountains, deep
forests and ancient hilltop castles show an area of outstanding natural
beauty and historical interest. The best beach, however, is just 10
minutes from Alicante; 5 kilometres long, the San Juan white sand
beach is lined with bars and cafés, and has every conceivable
water sport imaginable available for tourists and residents alike
to enjoy.
