Altea
One of the historic jewels of Spain's 'White Coast', Altea is a picture
postcard-perfect coastal town of true beauty, amplified by the magnificent
scenery that surrounds it. In the region of Alicante, Altea's startling
loveliness almost mesmerises as you explore the ancient cobbled streets
of the old quarter or stroll along the fabulous beachfront esplanade.
The Costa Blanca has a great many lovely resort destinations, but
Altea holds a very special place in the hearts of anyone who has had
the good fortune of spending time getting to know the place. Even
the town name (of Moorish derivation) conveys a sense of wellbeing:
originally 'Althaya', translating as "health to all"!
Situated just 11 kilometres north from Benidorm, and yet world's apart,
Altea provides visitors with a warm welcome, plus plenty to be seeing
and doing in the town. Most of your attentions will naturally be drawn
to the historic heart of Altea, gathered around a hilltop that faces
the twinkling deep blue of the Mediterranean. But a word of warning
to you if you could be in better shape: the streets are steep as they
wind towards the top of the town, so take it at your own pace on a
hot day, making sure you take breathers and drink plenty of water!
But it is worth the effort of the climb, as the views you will be
treated to at several junctures are simply fantastic.
The lower part of Altea is the modern section of the town, where there
is a fine choice of restaurants, cafés, bars and shopping.
Development has been measured here, so as not to detract from the
magical qualities of the pretty hillside community. Altea is a destination
that offers tranquillity and real quality of life, so has become very
popular with British retirees who have become an integral part of
a slowly-expanding international community.
